What is an apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy is a type of endodontic microsurgery used when a root canal alone isn’t enough to heal an infection. During this procedure, the endodontist removes the tip (or apex) of the tooth’s root along with the surrounding infected tissue. A small filling is placed at the end of the root to seal it and prevent future infection—giving your tooth a second chance.

The Benefits of an Apicoectomy

Long-Term Tooth Preservation

When a standard root canal isn’t enough, an apicoectomy offers a final solution to save your natural tooth and avoid extraction.

Targeted Relief at the Source

By removing the infected tip of the root and sealing the area, we eliminate persistent infections that may be hiding deep within the bone.

Quick Recovery and Minimal Downtime

With advanced tools and biologics like PRF, recovery is faster and more comfortable than ever—so you can get back to smiling sooner.

The Apicoectomy Treatment Process

Access and Clean

Dr. Lynn will begin by gently numbing the area and making a small incision in the gum to access the tip of the tooth’s root. Using advanced digital imaging and magnification tools, we precisely locate the source of the infection. The infected or inflamed tissue, along with the very end of the root, is carefully removed to eliminate bacteria and reduce the risk of future infection.

Seal and Protect

Once the area is thoroughly cleaned, we place a tiny biocompatible filling at the root tip to seal the canal and prevent reinfection. In some cases, we may also use additional biologic materials like PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) or guided tissue regeneration to encourage healing and rebuild lost bone. Every step is done under high-powered magnification for maximum accuracy and long-term success.

Closure and Recovery

The gum tissue is gently repositioned and sutured closed. You'll receive personalized aftercare instructions to support a smooth recovery. Most patients experience only minor discomfort and return to their regular routine within a few days. Over the next few months, the surrounding bone and tissue will regenerate, allowing your tooth to heal fully and function naturally.
